Today I swam for a few hours this a morning and tried to surf this afternoon. The swimming was delightful. The surfing didn’t work out as well and I got a little burnt. Now Jill is working on a website and we are waiting to hear back from our host in Granada, Nicaragua. Tomorrow is our travel day to there. We leave here around 4 AM.… Read the rest

Today is our last in Antigua for a time. Of course the day is gorgeous. The sky is brilliant blue. The volcanoes are clear of clouds. So, I’m watching Fuego puff it’s puffs. Agua sits to the south stretching upwards like the earth slowly trying to invade heaven.
Soon we will go find bus tickets for our journey south. We leave Guatemala behind, something seen, something done, future fodder for small talk with strangers.… Read the rest

I went and caught a cold. I haven’t been doing a lot other than drinking a lot of water. We ate at a French Crepe restaurant that Jill fell in love with. I guess that was Valentine’s Day and the day before. Today we dropped off a load of laundry and went for a walk. We’ve been trying to figure out a route for our travels and the plan keeps evolving.… Read the rest

We got up early this morning and headed out to find the address of Safe Passage in Antigua. We walked to the right street and started walking north because the numbers got smaller in that direction and we were looking for number 4. We found door number 5 then a blank door and then number 3D. The blank door was a garage door that didn’t look inviting.… Read the rest

Yesterday, I sent the laundry to be done. I had managed to get food all over one pair of pants and yellow chalk on the other. I studied Spanish on Duolingo. We went out to the market. Jill went to her cooking class and I walked over to a presentation by a woman who started a charity called WINGS. Her organization provides access to birth control for women who can’t afford it.… Read the rest

When we returned to Antigua from the hike we were zombies. We ate a simple lunch and I fell asleep for 2 hours. Then we went out for supper and I ate a double cheeseburger that was entirely too big. I felt almost normal after that but we went to bed early again and slept through the night. The morning brought Saturday and a bowl of oatmeal that never tasted so good.… Read the rest

So, we hiked up Volcano Acatenango on Thursday. Climbing up a hill made of dirt and gravel it was most akin to. Each step was always accompanied by the fear of a slip. 26 footfalls raised a cloud of powder in our line of 13 tourists from around the world. We hiked up for 6 hours starting in farm fields going through forests into the clouds.… Read the rest

We went to the market this morning and picked up a few things. Then we went to find a baguette and walked up to the Cerro de la Cruz and had lunch. It was a beautiful day and we looked at view for a while. We looked in on the Candelaria ruin on our walk. It’s closed to the public and looks like it is someone’s driveway.… Read the rest

Yesterday we walked through the ruins of the San Francisco convent. The place was almost empty. The scale of it all isĀ amazing. Completely different from the reformed ruin of Santo Domingo. Most of San Francisco has not been rebuilt. Huge columns support lonely walls reaching into a blue sky. There are smudges of original designs in plasterĀ on the bricks.… Read the rest

Today we sat around all morning talking to our new roommate Jasmine from Germany. We walked up Cerro de la Cruz at noon and took some pictures. Then we caught a shuttle to Cerro Santo Domingo it has a sculpture garden and a restaurant. We went for the most important thing first, the canopy zip lines. We soared through the trees on a bunch of different cables.… Read the rest
