Today we got up and walked to a Cafe and got some coffee and tea. I bought a triple chocolate espresso brownie as well. We walked to the Ragamuffin Tours and checked in for our snorkeling tour. We got fitted for masks and fins and they asked what we wanted for lunch. We both ordered the seafood curry. We walked back to the hostel and ate our granola breakfast.… Read the rest

Today started out rainy but it has been a beautiful afternoon. I blogged this morning. We went out for coffee and got a few rum balls too. They look like truffles but were more like cookie dough, delicious. We had takeout lunch at the Split. I had a burrito with no hot sauce but it was a great tortilla. Then I swam at the split and retrieved glass bottles for Jill.… Read the rest

It’s raining out this morning. I didn’t have a chance to do this last night. We crossed the Mexican border just after sunrise in a full van. The driver didn’t speak english. Jill and I had used up our Pesos at the bus station. When the border guard asked for our exit fee we weren’t too sure what to do. Then some nice Minnesotans from the van offered to lend us the cash to get out of the country.… Read the rest

I’m sitting on the terrace of the Hostel Paakal in Chetumal, MX. It is a gorgeous evening. There is a busy road down below and the sounds of cars and motorcycles drift up. We are in the midst of a city. Just a few hours ago we left the village of Bacalar. Bacalar is an amazing place and I wish we had stayed a little longer.… Read the rest

Hello from Bacalar, MX. This morning in Tulum, we went to see the Ruins. That was as easy as biking across the road. Our hostel was well placed. The Mayan ruins were spectacular. The Mayans called it Zama but the Spanish called it Tulum. We wandered around the walled-city for a couple hours in the sun and strong wind off the Caribbean.… Read the rest

We had a late night last night. We walked around the Quinta Avenida with faces painted. There were many others so we didn’t stand out all that much. We found a great deal on some beer. I think it was 2¢ per ounce. Mar, the new spaniard, is an accountant, she did all the negotiating. Then we went on a hunt for cheap Mojitos which took us all over the tourist district.… Read the rest

Today, Jill and I went to the Centro Maya mall and ate breakfast in the food court. I had an English Muffin and Jill ate a bagel. We thought about going to the new Book of Life movie. It is playing at the Cineplex there. In the meantime we went to the beach and watched a beach volleyball tournament. We ate more peanut butter tortillas on a rickety pier and watched the waves roll in.… Read the rest

I had coffee at las chimichangas this morning. I sat on the porch and looked at the people and traffic passing by. I thought about our hostel and the people here. I watched a truck laden with gravel maneuver between a pile of sand and a white Toyota. He went back and forth again and again. He finally dumped his load in the correct spot while coordinating with two construction workers.… Read the rest
