We Go Up a Hill and Back Down Again

March 4, 2020: Covid situation China has 80,270 cases, Malaysia has 50 cases, and the USA has 159 [Wikipedia]

Well what are we going to do now. Would we get this new apartment, how would the internet be, when were we going back to Shenzhen. We were in another wait-and-see pattern. Of course, it was time to follow our friends’ advice and go to Penang Hill and the A&W fast food restaurant there. I watched a video about some folks going there to see the sunrise, so that’s what we did. Penang Hill is a group of hills covered in jungle and mansions. It’s a bit cooler than the sea level places around it. There are some tourist activities. Penang Hill is accessed by windy roads or a vertical tramway known as a funicular. It’s the only one in Malaysia. Jill and I rode one years ago in France, I think.

We woke up early went to the only open coffee shop and met our taxi there. He drove us through the interior of the island toward the hill, places we hadn’t yet seen flew by in the dawn light. When we arrived at the tram station, there was A&W in all its glory but closed for a few more hours. So, we jumped on the first tram of the day with a few of the workers and it started to crank its way up the hill. When we arrived we ran to the lookout and greeted the sun with our coffees. I think we also had a little breakfast there. Afterwards we took a long looping walk on the hilltop roads.

Then it was back down the funicular to A&W for a snack. That was enough excitement for that day.

In Bahasa the hill is named Bukit Bendera or flag hill because there was a flagpole there. It was also known as Strawberry Hill.
