Hello from Bacalar, MX. This morning in Tulum, we went to see the Ruins. That was as easy as biking across the road. Our hostel was well placed. The Mayan ruins were spectacular. The Mayans called it Zama but the Spanish called it Tulum. We wandered around the walled-city for a couple hours in the sun and strong wind off the Caribbean. The waves were tremendous and crashing into the cliffs and beaches. There were also Iguanas sunning themselves that were fun to pick out amidst the buildings. It seemed incongruous, a statuesque Iguana and all the vegetation blowing around. Jill took many pictures and I took a few with my phone. I don’t have any with Iguanas.

This is called Pyramid El Castillo.
Some Ruins
On the left is the Temple of Frescoes and on the right is something called the Funerary Platform.
A guard tower stands above the wall and some bushes.

They aren’t generous with interpretive signage, so it may be worth getting a guided tour. Most of the guides we heard were interesting. There are a few who stand right outside the park office so it isn’t hard to find someone willing. We could’ve spent more time wandering the ruins but the crowds steadily grow out of tour buses as the morning goes one. Close to 8 AM opening time is best to get there. We took our bikes over to the public beach next to the ruins and took some more pictures. The water was beautiful colors. Here is one picture I took of it. Beach, cliffs and water.

We didn’t swim because of the waves and wind. It seemed like it might rain as well. We returned to the hostel and retrieved our luggage and lugged it down the bike path back to Tulum, the town. We wandered around looking for a good cheap restaurant. Taking a energy break in a park, we ate a cup of Watermelon, Papaya, Orange, cucumber. Then we settled for El Capitan restaurant which was a little expensive but the food was delicious. I had Pescada Tostadas and Jill had the Pirate Tacos. We also chatted with our waiter and he convinced us to stop in Bacalar. It took a couple hours to get here on the bus, so we arrived in the dark. We grabbed a taxi and told him to take us to a hotel and so here we are at the Hotel America. Tomorrow we will explore this neat little town that is on a large lake. There is supposedly good snorkeling and some cenotes here.

And the adventures continue! I look for your reports every day but need to get a better map so I can follow your route in more detail. Good writing, Martin. You get an “A”!
