Max talked to Jill this morning over the phone. He invited us to go help out in Coban at the restaurant. We are excited to go to the city. Maybe we will move on sooner than we thought. I hadn’t let that thought enter my head but it does make me excited now. Lanquin is beautiful but travelers stay here and get out in a couple days. That is all it takes to see the sights. We’ve been here two weeks and are itching to make use of the encyclopedia of tips we’ve gained from guests.
Lorraine got the job in Moscow and will stop in Ireland for Christmas with her grandma. That is one thing she was longing to do. She would’ve missed it if not for the new job. It reminds me of family as well. I was able to talk to mine today. It was a nice chat and I hope we can do it more often after we get to Coban. We seem to be more here isolated here than ever. The shop we buy Internet from has been closed all day.
This place was a wonderful learning experience. It has so many things that are buried behind my language barrier. I long to return with a few books on the local wildlife, plants, geology, archaeology, etc. A direct phone to my father would work too. It makes me appreciate the books and knowledge he’s collected over the years.
The hostel is pretty quiet tonight. There are some Koreans staying the night and a couple Germans as well. Not many walk ins from the tourist shuttles are expected either. It’s been chilly here yesterday and today. I’ve got on the jacket that I only expected to wear in the mountains of Peru! Maybe the tourists stay away because they watched the weather. Pepe, one of our guides, told me he thought it would be warmer tomorrow. It was very Guatemalan of him, as in the maybe-tomorrow attitude. I suppose he could just as easily be in Minnesota watching snow fall. I think it will warm up tomorrow.
We’re excited for you, too, Martin! It was so great to talk to you yesterday. There was definitely a gap in the family on Thanksgiving and that call from you and Jill meant a lot! And we even got to see you!!! Ah, the world of high tech that I don’t understand at all but am happy it’s available so you can keep in touch with us.
Your father will appreciate your comments. Thanks so much!
Love, Mom (and Dad)
We enjoy your comments, Martin. They are the high point of our day. Sorry I missed you and Jill yesterday. Good luck! Dad.
