Yesterday was the last day of Spanish school. We also tried to go to the Moxviquil orchid garden but it was closed already. So we went to the Mayan Medicine Museum. We watched a movie and learned about a Mayan birth. The midwife prays and drinks soda to assure a healthy baby. There is also some Pox spitting. The momma can’t eat onions or avocados for three months because it will make the baby sick. The husband buries the placenta in the house. It goes face up or facedown whether they want a girl or boy next. I’m not sure where the face of the placenta is. The museum had a nice garden, a horse, and a fancy outhouse. They also have a traditional pharmacy. We walked back to the hostel and made supper. Later we joined a group at a bar for a bit.
Today we went on an excursion to the sumidero canyon by chapas de corzo. We road in a speedboat with a group downstream through the canyon it was gorgeous. We saw some crocodiles and a couple monkeys. It finally ended at the dam. The dam makes power for Chiapas and Guatemala! There was a little boat at the end selling snacks and beers. It was much warmer at the town than in San Cristobal because it is at a lower altitude. We got to walk around the town for an hour. They are having a festival and there were many women and girls dressed up. Many men had on a heavy outfit with a strange helmet. They would also wear masks over their faces and shake morrocas. Upon our return to San Cris we got our Salsa dancing lesson that came with our Spanish school. I need to practice. Jill did better. Now I’m tired and need to go to bed.
Did you learn how to do the meringue?
