Today we are in Haucachina. This is an Oasis outside Ica. There is a lagoon in the middle which may have curative properties and was a sanitarium of sorts. It’s been taken over by sand boarding kids on holiday. We may be a bit old for this place.
We arrived in Ica by bus from Nazca Yesterday afternoon wishing to stay there. Ica is a city full of people and honking taxis. The honks are multiple and for reasons only known to the drivers. It led us a short taxi ride to Huacachina. Our taxi had an unpleasant siren instead of a horn.
There is one street that parallels three sides of the lagoon here. Lining the street are hotels with restaurants and tour agencies. Our first stop was the Huacachinero hotel. We were ready to splurge on what the guidebook said was 100 Sols (about 32 USD) a night. The front desk politely told us the cheapest room was 205 Sols. We pleaded a bit to no avail. The hotel across the street sold us a rather dingy room for 65 Sols. Today, maybe we will find a better place.
So what are your more long term plans? Are you heading north?
We turned around at Arica technically.
Seems like you said “five weeks.” I counted and it was the middle of May – does that mean you”ll be back about then?
